Tasting Notes

Displaying spectacular aromatics of mulberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit, a dense ruby/purple color, and sweet floral notes, in the mouth the 2005 La Conseillante is not as broad and powerful as Petrus, Trotanoy, Hosanna or Lafleur, but it is gorgeously silky, elegant and stylish. This medium-bodied, savory wine is a graceful, provocative and compelling Pomerol to drink now and over the next 25 years. Drink 2015-2040.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (219), June 2015

The Château La Conseillante 2005 has a flamboyant bouquet that just soars from the glass with scents of crème de cassis, blueberry, violets and a hint of black olive. This is far more exuberant than I remember it. The palate is full-bodied with ripe and underpinned by sumptuous tannins. It has extremely well-judged acidity, enormous depth and volume and a complex finish with lightly spice dark cherries, blackcurrant pastilles and minerals. There is a sense of completeness and harmony to this La Conseillante, allied with an audaciousness that is truly compelling. Drink 2020 - 2050

Neal Martin, RobertParker.com, February 2015

This really does have a wonderful texture that is reminiscent of great pinot noir while remaining obviously cabernet franc and merlot. It shows a seductive nose of cream, berries, chocolate and flowers. It's full-bodied, very intense and seamless in length. Pure class. Drink now and enjoy but will improve for years ahead.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, October 2015

Deep garnet-brick in color, the 2005 La Conseillante is showing some evolution on the nose with notions of cigar box, Chinese five spice, and dusty soil over a core of prunes and figs. Medium-bodied, it delivers mature, exotic, spice-laced dried berry flavors with a chewy texture and a lively backbone, going earthy / savory on the finish. Already relatively evolved, this should continue to cellar to 2040+. La Conseillante is next to L'Evangile, just across the Saint-Emilion border from Cheval Blanc and, in fact, a portion of the vineyard is in Saint-Emilion.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Independent, July 2022

Tasted blind. Deep healthy garnet. Sweet, almost brûlée nose. Quite extracted. Lots there but it’s not giving much at the moment. Rather leathery on the end after a bit of red satin impression. Chewy finish. Just a little rustic in terms of tannin quality.

Dark and spicy on the nose, rich, dense and yet still juicy. Very fine fresh tannins and a long fresh finish. Very lively.Drink 2012-2025.Date tasted 6th Dec 07.

Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, December 2007

Tasted blind in a 12 wine flight of top 2005 Pomerols. This won the flight ahead of L'Eglise Clinet, VCC, Evangile and Lafleur. A sensational Pomerol that is now ready to drink. Smooth, creamy and incredibly seductive. This is simply gorgeous with layers of ripe Merlot fruit, a creamy texture and a velvetty mouthfeel. Long and lingering. Pomerol doesn't get much better than this.

Farr Vintners, February 2017

Bright, medium red-ruby. Superripe, complex aromas of kirsch, musky espresso, fruity dark chocolate, spices and game. Wonderfully lush, sweet, dense and ripe; in fact, atypically large-scaled (this is 13.7% alcohol) and full for La Conseillante but perfectly framed by harmonious acidity. The light meaty quality is buried in dark fruits on the palate. The spreading, horizontal finish is very sweet, subtle and long, with fine-grained tannins and lovely lingering aromatic perfume. This beauty will be great fun to follow over the next couple of decades.

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar

The nose has ripe black fruited sweetness the palate the richness of black plum and black cherry. The mid tannins are firm but ripe the back palate lighter quite fresh but it fills out on the finish sumptuous, rich, ripe, generous and fleshy.

Derek Smedley MW, DerekSmedleyMW.co.uk, March 2017

La Conseillante maintain's its fine, elegant style bolstered by an added layer of fruit and reserve. Fresh, floral, red fruit bouquet, fine, firm tannic frame, soft round feel to the palate. Great length. Drink 2015-2035.

With the son of the Nicolas family, Valmy, taking over and ratcheting up the selection process as well as the quality, La Conseillante appears poised to challenge its closest neighbor, l’Evangile, as the finest estate on the border of the sector of Pomerol facing Cheval Blanc in St.-Emilion. The 2005 will challenge the extraordinary 2000. Among the truly fabulous wines made here (i.e., 2000, 1990, 1989, 1985, and 1982), its deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by an exquisite bouquet of incense, raspberry jam, kirsch, licorice, and hints of black olives as well as flowers. This broadly perfumed Pomerol exhibits sensational purity, sweet tannin, medium to full body, and outstanding elegance and finesse. The fruit is forward and precocious, but there is enough stuffing, structure, and density for the wine to evolve for 20-25 years

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (176), April 2008

La Conseillante’s superb 2005 appears capable of rivaling their 2000, 1990, 1989, and 1982. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by a sweet perfume of black raspberries, vanilla, licorice, and hints of earth and pepper. Spicy, plush, and elegant with a classic floral component, superb concentration, beautiful purity, medium body, sweet tannin, and an overall sense of finesse (despite its intense richness and fruit), it will be approachable in 4-5 years, and will keep for two decades or more.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (170), April 2007

The finest La Conseillante since 2000, the dense purple-colored 2005 displays notes of sweet raspberries, creamy vanilla ice cream, spice box, and cedar. With good fruit, depth, and a broad, savory attack as well as mid-palate, this medium-bodied, finesse-styled, elegant wine represents a synthesis in style between a grand cru red Burgundy and a top-notch Bordeaux. Give it 3-5 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 20-25.

James Suckling, WineSpectator.com, February 2008

This is soft and velvety with lots of character from crushed blackberries to raspberry. It is so long and beautiful yet with a powerful texture of ripe tannins. Better than I remember. Almost classic quality.

James Suckling, WineSpectator.com, April 2007

Classy aromas of flowers, berries and minerals. Full-bodied, with lovely silky tannins and a long finish. Has the potential for a classic rating. Best in a long time

James Suckling, WineSpectator.com, April 2006

Scented and fresh with lots of non-exaggerated appeal. Masses of fruit almost disguises the tannins which are there lurking in abundance. Very fresh finish. Well done! But without quite the concentration and liquorice interest of the Église-Clinet. 13.5%
Drink 2020-2040

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, February 2015

Lively, vivid nose that sparkles with life. Zesty wine which has a cocktail of fine fruit on the mid palate but masses of pretty inky tannins on the finish. Keep this! Drink 2016-28. 17.5
