The 2023 Chardonnay Vrede includes 20% whole bunch and matured in 35% new French oak. A little more precise and mineral-driven, it has a slightly earthier and more resinous bouquet than the Ridge. Crisp and tensile, the palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. A twist of lemon rind lends energy on the finish. Highly recommended. Drink 2025-2035.
The Storm 2023 Hemel-En-Aarde Valley Chardonnay Vrede comes from a site a mere 1.3 kilometers from the cool Atlantic Ocean. "This is a big wine in a small package," says winemaker and proprietor Hannes Storm. It reveals tight phenolic grip and a richer style with citrus marmalade and yellow orchard fruits. You practically taste salt crystals on thickened grape skins. It offers terrific length thanks to that extra structure, finishes dry and closes with flinty mineral sensations. The 2023 vintage was rainy. Hannes Storm harvested on a Friday, and a heavy storm the next day dropped five inches of rain, causing flooding and visible erosion in the surrounding mountains.
A bolder and creamier wine than the Ridge Chardonnay, the nose on this year's Vrede is spicy and savoury, laden with notes for silky peaches and tangy mandarin. The creamy, lightly nutty notes integrate wonderfully on both nose and palate, creating a wine with a satin sheen, seductive yet never fat. Tangy acids and hints of crunchy apples prop up the broader, fuller stone fruit and buttered toast notes at the core. A generous yet highly refined Chardonnay. Drink now, or over the coming decade. 298 cases produced.
