Savory and brooding aromas of dark cherries, blackberries, ferric earth, blood oranges and cedar on the nose. The palate has finely integrated tannins and a medium-bodied mouthfeel, giving notes of raspberry coulis, graphite and watermelon rind. Refined and pure with an underlying power. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
The 2023 MacMuir Pinot Noir leads with cocoa powder and pomegranate, dried herbs and caper brine. The palate offers all of this and more, framed by fine, chalky tannins and a wash of juicy acidity that feels watercolor-like and impressionist in the mouth. I like this wine very much, and the slightly lighter frame this year works well for it. It is chewy and good, with asphalt and petrichor through the finish. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. MacMuir is quickly becoming a very impressive wine for Felton Road. The fruit has a Vosne-like dark peppery spice, with darker fruit subsuming some of the brighter strawberry and red berry tones. The herbal accents of whole-bunch are more present on the palate and offset the dark fruit profile very nicely, marrying ripeness and lift. There is a note of black tea that lingers with wood spice and succulent fruit on a very long finish. Well made and richly structured. Give it a few years in bottle.
Mid crimson. Dark-red fruit with a suggestion of oak spice. Tied up in the structure at the moment, the fruit subdued but still providing the heart of the wine. Firm, smooth, serious and needs more time.
