Like next-door neighbour Latour, Léoville Las Cases produces a wine that people think of as a second wine, but isn't. Clos du Marquis is a wine of classed growth quality in its own right, produced from a vineyard on the other side of the road near to the vines of Leoville Poyferré. Las Cases itself is situated in a walled vineyard alongside Latour overlooking the estuary. Clos du Marquis is the equal of most 3rd, 4th and 5th growths and has been an outstanding performer for many years.
In 2022, the 44 hectares have produced 34 hl/ha with the blend 44.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45.5%Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. 14.25% alcohol.
"We've never seen such refined Cabernet Sauvignon at this property," says Jean-Hubert Delon of the 2022 Clos du Marquis, and the resulting wine is certainly unusually suave and expressive, bursting with aromas of cassis, plums, orange zest, violets and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with excellent concentration, supple tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish, it will likely offer a rather broad drinking window.
A deep colour in the glass. Dark fruited with subtle hints of briary and all spice on the nose. The palate has a saline deoth and powdery, but persistent tannic grip. The refinement of the tannins is impressive, this is texturally seductive while reaining freshness of fruit. Long, fine, supple and delicious.
Structured and fluffy with a blanket of fine tannins. Full-bodied yet agile and floating. Juicy at the end. Excellent finish. Lots of lead pencil and crushed stone at the end. 45.5% merlot, 44.5% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc.
A blend of 45.5% Merlot, 44.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Clos du Marquis has a deep garnet-purple color. It charges out of the gate with notes of crème de cassis, plum preserves, and juicy blueberries, followed by wafts of dried roses, fertile loam, and unsmoked cigars. The medium-bodied palate has lovely freshness and fine-grained tannins framing the exuberant black fruits, finishing with a refreshing lift.
Cocoa bean, smoked coffee bean, intense tannins, powerful with depth and concentration, dense tannins, cassis and baked plum fruits, a ton of dark pepper spice, and baked earth, expands outwards through the palate, plenty of St Julien character. 34 hl/ha, 53% new barrels, 3.7ph. As of this vintage, the vines that were in le Petit Marquis have been included back into Clos du Marquis.
