Tasting Notes

Loads of ripe fruit are present in this wine, but I was surprised by what appeared to be a lack of complexity and nuance. It is certainly chunky, has a dense ruby/purple color and the concentration is adequate. The wine showed blue, red and black fruits, spice, and earth, but is not showing the nuances and complexity I would have expected. Drink it over the next 15 years. Drink 2015-2030.

Tasted from a barrel sample at en primeur. The de Fieuzal Rouge has a succulent bouquet of blackberry, cassis and vanilla that is modern, well defined and showy. The palate is medium-bodied with a black coffee infused entry. The acidity is crisp and there is decent fruit concentration, but the finish is a little too oaky at the moment. Let us see how it melds during élevage. Tasted April 2013.

This young red has plenty of berry and vanilla character with hints of chocolate. Full body, with velvety tannins and a juicy finish.

Dark crimson with a pale-ish rim. Hint of greenness on the nose. Round and sweet. Simpler than some but fresh and appetising. Just a little lightweight. Drink 2019-2028

Consistently good wines are produced here at this Irish-owned Chateau. The prices remain modest despite the quality and the wines are always typically Graves in style. Strong efforts are being made here now with Hubert de Bouard of Angelus being brought in to oversee the winemaking. There is some very sexy, toasty oak on the nose here. The palate is full of black cherry fruit with hints of espresso coffee. Well-rounded with ripe tannins. Forward and seductive.

Farr Vintners, March 2013

The nose is lovely and bright with fresh fruits. The start of the palate is light fresh red fruited but towards the back there is more weight a greater depth and richness of flavour. The finish is firm with slightly dry tannins. 2018-30.

Sweet black currant, lead pencil shavings, charcoal and camphor aromas are followed by a medium-bodied, front end-loaded, dark ruby/purple-colored wine with attractive fruit, medium body, sweet tannin and a surprisingly well-balanced, long finish. This potentially outstanding wine is another example of how successful Pessac-Leognan was in 2012. Drink it over the next 12-15 years.
