The 1955 Yquem was opened by Pierre Lurton, since the previous bottle a couple of years earlier had been corked. Pure amber in colour, this has a sublime bouquet with marmalade, elderflower, saffron, Seville orange and just a touch of strawberry. The palate is very well balanced with fine delineation, a superb line of acidity and rich with botrytis. Orange rind, marmalade, white peaches and Vervain tea all vie for attention, whilst the finish has brilliant tension. This is a divine Yquem that might well challenge the 1959. Tasted at the château with Pierre Lurton and Sandrine Garbay. 2021-2040
Fox red. So rich yet subtle. Some umami savour but it manages to be both unctuous and vital. This wine's burnt edge does not detract but just adds interest. Fabulous!
Darker in color than I would have expected, it was on the deep, dark, amber side of caramel, or mahogany, don't let the color scare you off. The aromatics sizzled with coffee, caramel, butterscotch, nuts buttered tropical fruit and honey. Thick, rich and fat, yes, the wine could have used a bit more freshness, but the finish was long, intense, sweet and packed with flavor. I know d'Yquem is shockingly expensive, but when Yquem just starts to get going, at perhaps 40-50-60 years of age, the other Sauternes are usually left in the dust.
