The Wintzenheim 2020 Riesling Clos Häuserer is from a warm setting below the grand cru Hengst with marly soils topping the limestone rock. Very intense but pure and iodine-like on the nose, this is a full-bodied, silky-textured, very elegant, saline and finely tannic Riesling with lots of power, richness and a dense texture. With moderate 13.2% alcohol, this is a fresh but somewhat narrow and caged Riesling with some astringency on the finish. It was bottled with 6.6 grams per liter of residual sugar and a natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2022. Drink 2025-2045.
A lot of riesling freaks say the grape needs stony soils, but here’s a beautiful example of how well it can do on clay-rich soil. So much citrus and peach here, even though there’s still a touch of youthful leeriness. Rich and powerful, it also has a very firm core behind the breathtaking succulence. Already great integration of concentration, fine tannins and bright acidity through the very long and complete finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
