This 7 hectare vineyard in the heart of Saint Emilion adjoins Ausone and has the same owner and winemaker. The Vauthier family have owned it since 1921. Around 2500 cases are produced annually.
The 2019 Moulin St Georges has turned out brilliantly, offering up aromas of cherries, wild berries, violets, sweet spices and raw cocoa, followed by a medium to full-bodied, bright and vibrant palate, with a concentrated core of fruit, tangy acids and beautifully refined tannins. From a seven-hectare, west-facing vineyard opposite Ausone that always ripens some 10 days later than Ausone itself, Moulin St Georges has come into its own in this warm, dry vintage, delivering a wine of notable energy and finesse. 2025 - 2055
The 2019 Moulin Saint-Georges has lilting bouquet of raspberry preserve, cranberry and light undergrowth scents that gain intensity with aeration. A touch of orange pith emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied, taut and fresh, with supple tannins and a fine-grained, quite cohesive finish. There is a little more sophistication and elegance embroidered into this Saint-Émilion than recent vintages. 2026-2050
Tasted blind at Southwold. A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, aged for 18 months in oak. Deep colour. Fragrant with blue fruit, cherry blossom and darker plum tones on the nose. The palate matches energy and intensity, a ripe core lined with refreshing acidity. This is perfectly poised, harnessing the vintage with a succulent core yet direct and driven. Tones of graphite and an unerring perception of coolness throughout make this very moreish. The tannins are seamless, framing the fruit gently. The long finish is lined with unobtrusive hints of spice - this has the potential to age well in the cellar but will drink well within the next 2-3 years. Excellent.
Pretty nose of wild blueberries, cherries, iron, cloves, pine cones, dried flowers and chocolate. It’s medium-bodied with a vibrant, spicy and fragrant palate, framed by sleek, silky tannins. Drink from 2025.
The 2019 Moulin Saint-Georges is composed of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it storms out of the glass with notes of baked plum, stewed blueberries, and fruitcake, plus suggestions of vanilla pod and cinnamon stick. The medium to full-bodied palate has a racy backbone with fine-grained tannins and a long perfumed finish.
Tasted blind. Rich and lively. With lots of interest, energy, juice and great balance. Confident and exuberant. 13.5%. Drink 2025 – 2040
The 2019 is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, and will be aged for 18 months in oak. Deep ruby in colour with an opulent, fragrant nose of spiced plums, cedar, vanilla and morello cherry. The palate is fleshy and round, with no hard edges to detract from the ripe forest fruit at the core. Layers of plum and cherry danishes are lifted to more floral tones by fresh acidity. The finish is succulent but equally vibrant. Tasted in Bordeaux.
85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc. Barrel sample.
Fresh, red-berry aroma with an almost burgundian edge. Palate round, juicy and lifted with finely etched tannins. Harmonious and almost approachable now. (JL)
