Louis Mitjavile makes this near Ch Ferrand Lartigue.
Tasted blind. Both sweet and sharp with lots of density. And pretty tannic on the end. Lots going on there. Interesting!
Drink 2023-2035
Tasted blind at the Southwold group 2014 tasting.
Deep ruby colour, with an exotic, expressive nose of bramble fruits, liquorice, roasted coffee and nutmeg. The palate is smooth and round, with plush, ripe and soft tannins framing ripe and juicy fruit. This is smooth and plump, with lashings of smoky, spicy notes to add layers of complexity. The fruit cuts through the spiciness and gives a juicy mid-palate that is very moreish. Ripe and vibrant through to the finish, this can be drunk now but will continue to develop well over the next 6-10 years.
Made by Louis Mitjavile in 100% "Radoux Blend" new oak, exactly the same barrels that are used at his family property, Le Tertre Roteboeuf. Only 800 cases were produced from this small Saint Emilion vineyard of 1.8 hectares - which is planted with 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. After fermentation in temperature controlled concrete vats, the wine was aged for 21 months in barrel before bottling in September 2017. Viticulture and vinification here are identical to that at Le Tertre Roteboeuf and Roc de Cambes.
The Alverne 2014 has a seductive, smokey nose of spice and vanilla with a hint of black truffles. On the palate it is delightfully smooth and round. The texture is velvety and soft with well-integrated and melted tannins. Lovely balance here with ripe blueberry fruit and toasty oak. Whilst youthful, this can already be enjoyed with an hour in the decanter. A delightful and exotic Saint Emilion that is ripe, sweet and charming, very much in the Tertre Roteboeuf style. Drink 2017 -2027.
