A serious glass of wine already, the Gravières Premier Cru has a mid-ruby sheen and complex nose that layers wild strawberries, hedgerow fruit, slick wood spice and just a touch of game. The palate is deep, with alluring red berry fruit cloaked in spicy, peppery wood smoke and framed by lightly chalky, ripe tannins. Smooth and polished in style, it is slick but focused, gently unfurling with time in the glass. Unforced and vibrant in fruit with a long, lightly smoky finish, this will be even better in a year or two and I expect will drink well for over a decade.
A full ruby to purple colour with vastly more depth of fruit on the nose than its predecessors in the tasting. A little helpful oak as well which the fruit can easily support. Fills the palate expertly, the wood perhaps needing to tone down with time in the bottle. The 35% new oak is showing a bit today, but will certainly diffuse. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted Oct 2024.
