Johnny Symington: Quite a historic wine because it was our first Cockburn declaration. We were lucky because it was a great year. Mild winter. Poor fruit set, long slow ripening in summer, a little bit of rain in August and a perfect September. Small quantities and great concentration, picked in late September. Touriga Nacional was picked pre Tinta Barroca. Perfect soft skins. ‘Frankly, what more could we have wanted?’ He’s sure they’ll be as proud of this debut wine as the family were of their debut Graham 1970. 2,500 cases were made. 45% Touriga Nacional, also Touriga Franca and old vines.
Very lively and intense and with lots of freshness. Great attack. Already some evolution aromatically. Crunchy just-ripe as opposed to overripe fruits and some very fine tannins on the end. Very beautifully balanced. Real lift on the finish. Not just mass here. Coming along beautifully. (JR) 2020
