This tiny Pomerol property (3.67 hectares) now has the same ownership as Chateau Latour. Planted with 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Along with Chateau Le Prieure, this is run by Pénélope Godefroy. This is a Chateau to watch. Certified organic in 2018, and practicing biodynamically. The vines have an average age of 50 years.
The 2019 Vray Croix de Gay has a charming bouquet, actually quite Saint-Émilion-like in style with those precocious crushed strawberry and raspberry scents mixed with allspice and subtle loamy/peaty notes. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, traces of black truffle intermingling with the black fruit, leading to a very cohesive and velvety finish. This is a lovely Pomerol from a rejuvenated estate under Vincent Millet. 2025 - 2045
A fragrant nose of blackberries, blueberries, cassis, dried lemon, milk chocolate and baking spices. Medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins. Rich, round and balanced with a silky, creamy texture. Spicy chocolate and fruity character at the finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink from 2024.
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Vray Croix de Gay has a powerful perfume of red roses, candied violets and jasmine tea over a core of stewed plums, black cherry compote and kirsch with wafts of tobacco leaf and powdered cinnamon. The full-bodied palate is densely packed with fragrant red and black fruits, framed by fantastic freshness and plush tannins, finishing long and wonderfully floral.
The 2019 is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, with an abv of 14.5%. The wine will be aged in 40% new French oak, 50% second fill barrels and 10% third fill barrels. Just 775 cases produced. Deep ruby in colour with a spicy nose of mulled cherries and blood orange. The palate is fleshy, with juicy red cherries and plums. The tannins are crunchy but soften nicely through the mid palate, allowing the floral, forward and juicy fruit to shine through. The oak is peppery and lightly smoky with tobacco but subtle and integrated. This vibrant and lithe wine should offer early and mid-term drinking pleasure.
The 2019 Vray Croix de Gay comes from a Pomerol estate I know well, though for some inexplicable reason I have not tasted recent vintages. That is obviously now rectified. It has a lovely bouquet, very pure and expressive with red cherries, wild strawberry, flecks of brown spices and loamy notes that emerge with aeration. The palate is cohesive and smooth, the fine tannins framing the red berry fruit laced with truffle and ferrous notes. It is quintessentially Pomerol and it should age well. It is nice to be reacquainted. 2025 - 2045
