Gevrey Chambertin Clos Saint Jacques, Domaine Armand Rousseau 2016

Tasting Notes

Don't miss! Outstanding
Rousseau noted that the 2016 CSJ contains more fruit from the upper portion as the lower part was heavily affected by the frost. An elegant, pure and exuberantly spicy nose blends notes of essence of red berries with wisps of earth, lavender and a background hint of oak. The equally pure middle weight flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration along with the same intense mineral streak as the Ruchottes while delivering stunningly good depth and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced finish. As good as the Ruchottes is, and it's first-rate, there is simply another dimension present here. Drink: 2031+

The 2016 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques, where 20% at the bottom of the vineyard was lost to frost, nevertheless has a wonderful bouquet that blossoms in the glass, quite floral with wilted rose petals, minerals and vivid red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and a little bit more sinewy than previous years, with good density and vigor but perhaps not with quite the same precision as the Ruchottes on the finish. Perhaps this is one cru from Rousseau that is not quite up there with the 2015, but then again, this wine can produce miracle in bottle... 2022 - 2045
