Tasting Notes

This is a massive Pomerol with incredible concentration and power yet it holds together beautifully with chocolate, walnut and dark fruit character. Remains vibrant and lively.

I loved the 2015 La Violette from barrel and it didn’t disappoint from bottle. Sporting a deep purple color as well as sensational notes of violets, black currants, toasty oak, and graphite, this awesome 2015 hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a seamless, sexy texture, no hard edges and fine, fine tannin. It’s the purity of fruit that really sets this gem apart and despite carrying serious amounts of richness and depth, it glides across the palate and is almost weightless. Give this heavenly little Garage wine 4-5 years of cellaring, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following two decades. 2023 - 2043

The 2015 La Violette has a very comely bouquet with red berry fruit, leather, sage and black truffle scents that are very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, and gentle grip. A rounded finish belies that backbone. What a superb Pomerol - very convincing, modern in style, sleek and quite penetrating. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

The 2015 La Violette is medium to deep garnet-purple with fragrant scents of potpourri, dried lavender, bouquet garni and cigar boxes over a core of warm plums, blueberry compote and cassis plus a waft of underbrush. Full-bodied, rich and opulent in the mouth and packed with black fruit and spice layers, it's framed with a firm yet velvety structure and oodles of freshness, finishing long. 2020 - 2042

Tasted blind. Lively dark crimson. Ripe black-cherry notes. Very sweet start. Verging on overripe notes with a hint of coconut oak. Big and brazen. Should sprinkle pleasure – except to classicists.

This 1.6 hectare vineyard is owned by the family of the late Catherine Péré-Vergé (of Chateau Le Gay) although 0.3 hectares are not currently in production. Only a few hundred cases of luxurious Pomerol are made here annually. The property is situated in between Le Pin and Trotanoy, and planted with 100% Merlot from 50 year old vines. The fruit is de-stemmed by hand by 50 people with micro-vinification and elevage in 100% new oak. Vibrant purple in the class. The nose is ripe and powerful with blueberry and blackberry fruit. The palate is ripe, thick and opulent with cherry blossom, forest fruits, and milk chocolate. Though this is full bodied it effortlessly carries the fruit intensity thanks to very fine, elegant and ripe tannins and lift from vanilla and sweet smoke. The finish is pure, and fine but powerful at the same time. The length of spice and fruit on the wine make it one to watch, if you can find it!

Brooding depth the fruit is ripe the palate fleshy and supple. Mid concentration rich black plum is backed by black cherry and although bright light and fresh at the back the finish has richness depth sweet ripe fruit.

The 2015 La Violette has a perfumed bouquet with dark cherries, raspberry coulis and cassis scents, stylish and elegant, perhaps one of the classically styled wines from this estate. The palate is medium-bodied with candied orange peel and sage on the entry. There is commendable fruit concentration here and although the finish is currently dominated by the 100% new oak, that should easily be assimilated with time in bottle. Excellent. Anticipated maturity: 2022 - 2038.

Neal Martin, March 2018

The 2015 La Violette is the late Catherine Père-Vergé's haut couture Pomerol: pure Merlot destemmed by hand and micro-vinified, then matured in 100% new Saury barrels. Delivering an alcohol at a modest 14.5%, it has a red cherry, kirsch, bergamot and dried orange peel scented bouquet that is defined with a touch of puppy fat; it handles the new oak in stride. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannin, well-judged acidity, silky smooth in texture, but perhaps not quite delivering that killer blow on the finish. Nevertheless, it is utterly seductive and very well crafted, one to watch when it is bottled. If you want a polished Pomerol, this is probably the place to come, for character and Pomerol typicité, turn to Le Gay. Drink 2020-2040.

Floral nose. Very sweet start. Very polished - a bit over-sculpted perhaps? Very chewy end.
