A very deep garnet core – much more youthful and opaque compared to the previous vintage. The nose is far more introverted than the ’85 with tobacco, graphite and tar. It seems to be coiled up, demanding a few more years before it unfurls its aromas. After ten minutes in glass, it begins to reveal an attractive minty aroma, greater freshness and precision. The palate is full-bodied, much more tannic and a little drier than the ’85. On the surface, the previous vintage is more appealing but this has more depth and structure with a grainy-textured, savoury finish. It does not have the breeding of Las-Cases across the road, yet it is still a great Poyferre to enjoy over the next decade. Drink now-2025
