This 1939 Maury is very deep in color. The nose is very intense, almost overpowering with mulberry, sloes, dark cherries and yellow plum. It is very youthful but does not quite have the finesse of other Maury wines. The palate is medium-bodied with a hint of Szechuan pepper on the entry. I like the structure here - heady and powerful, broody with thickly layered marmalade and dark plum on the finish that retains fine tension, if not quite the persistency I was expecting. Tasted December 2012.
100% Grenache Noir. Extinct domaine just uphill of Mas Amiel.
Very dark, blackish tawny. Intense but possibly just a very little old wood on the nose. But lovely richness and polish. Thick and treacly. Like fermented treacle toffees. 17%
