The 2019 Syrah Kershaw Clonal Selection Elgin is matured in just under 50% new oak. The nose was quite reduced when I tasted it, making it difficult to read at present. The palate is much more open and is framed by very fine tannins, layers of blackberry, black olive, white pepper and savoury notes, the finish fanning out wonderful and demonstrating great length. Give this four to five years in bottle. Superb. Drinking Window: 2026-2048
Like his Clonal Selection Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this Syrah uses fruit from a number of different Elgin parcels. Entirely destemmed and subsequently aged in 58% new wood, it's taut, tangy and meaty, with good weight, appealing tapenade and black olive flavours and a bright, refreshing, mineral core. Drinking Window 2023-2030
