Tasting Notes

Bright straw. Initially reduced nose clears with aeration to offer hints of rose water, lemon, minerals and apple jelly. The palate delivers penetrating, pure flavors of apple, pear, cinnamon, lemon and minerals. At 12.9 g/l residual sweetness and 5.7 g/l total acidity, this wine is very light on its feet but comes across as hard as nails at present. I wouldn’t touch a bottle for at least another 4 years, but it should give pleasure for another 15 or 20 after that. In my opinion, the Clos Saint Urbain Pinot Gris is Zind-Humbrecht's best wine, and while this 2013 really needs time, it's another superlative Pinot Gris in the making.

An intense citrus color dresses the 2013 Riesling Brand Grand Cru, which offers a deep and intense aroma of super ripe citrus aromas along with mineral flavors that reflect the steep, south-facing granite site very well. On the palate, the wine has much more freshness, finesse and purity than expected from the nose, and seems to be a flowing mountain range with a lemon taste and Mediterranean herbs in the aftertaste. This is a very persistent, salty and impressive wine for the next 15 or more years. A little bit of bottle age may help, but seems not really necessary at least at the moment of tasting in July 2015.
