An overtly spicy nose also displays moderate though by no means invisible oak influence along with plenty of earth character. There is outstanding volume, power, muscle and mid-palate concentration to the serious broad-shouldered flavors that deliver impressive persistence on the beautifully well-balanced and hugely long finish. This is a big but not hard wine though the supporting tannins are notably firm so note well that sufficient patience is a prerequisite.
The 2013 Bonnes-Mares from Domaine Jadot is also outstanding and was really singing at the time of my visit. The pure and youthfully complex nose delivers a fine constellation of black cherries, plums, cocoa, woodsmoke, gamebirds, lovely soil tones and a stylish base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure on the attack, with a fine core, suave tannins and excellent focus and balance on the very long, classy and energetic finish. Lovely juice.
