Total production of this wine was 150 cases (6 barrels). It was made from the best vines situated in the Croux and Petit Croux vineyards. Very creamy on the nose, with buttered peach, lemon curd and a little smoky, flinty character to add complexity. Huge concentration and intensity on the palate show layers from ripe cirtus through to ripe peach. Acidity lines the palate to give freshness and minerality, containing the dense and ripe core of fruit. There is real thickness of texture to the mouthfeel here which unravels complexity from struck flint and wood smoke. This will need a little time, but will unfold to be a truly superb wine from the Guffens Domaine. This is just about as good as Chardonnay can get, anywhere in the world. Harmonious, complex, and ageworthy.
A deft touch of wood does not interfere with the clear expression of the ripe, cool and mildly exotic white and yellow orchard fruit that also evidences hints of acacia blossom. There is terrific mid-palate concentration to the wonderfully rich, complex, delicious, racy and solidly persistent middle weight flavors that possess both more refinement and slightly better balance as well. While this should amply reward 8 to 12 years of cellar time it should age gracefully for years. Highly recommended.
Long a rather unyielding vintage at this address, the 2014 Pouilly-Fuissé Trente-Cinquième Vendange is finally starting to show more of its cards, unwinding in the glass with notes of pear, crisp green apple, freshly baked bread, toasted nuts and iodine, followed by a medium to full-bodied, taut and chiseled palate of exceptional depth and tension. This blend of Les Croux and the Clos des Petits Croux remains tightly wound, but one starts to get a sense of its potential.
The nose has a smoky white flowered charm acacia and orange blossom. Ripe and rich in the middle peachy there is depth of flavour density and power. The flint and shale on the back palate. Drink 2016-2024

Producer note: Please see Maison Verget below for general vintage details. However one important difference is that Guffens noted that he picked extremely slowly and did not finish until the second half of October when most growers started in the first week of September! The wines reviewed below had just been racked and sulfured so they were reduced. Note that owner Jean-Marie Guffens said that he has moved to 100% Diam (composite) corks effective with the 2011 vintage.
