Tasting Notes

The 2020 Barolo Sperss is a dark, brooding wine. Black fruit, leather, incense, game, gravel and scorched earth convey the essence of Serralunga's seriousness. A touch of small oak torrefaction character actually works well in this wine. Drinking Window 2026 - 2038

Bright dark red. Musky aromas of dark red cherry and plums, with ink, earthy nuances and sweet spices, picking up exotic notes of blood orange and dried cardamom with aeration. Sneakily supple and sweet on entry with flavours of red cherry, orange, peach and forest floor that are nicely framed by a strong tannic spine, this is very Serralunga in its extremely refined delivery of steely red and blue fruit. Finishes increasingly tannic and powerful, which is also very Serralunga. Will need to spend a lot of time in a good cellar prior to be ready to drink, but this is highly mineral, pretty wine is an absolute keeper. Drinking window: 2032-2044.

The 2020 Barolo Sperss is a bright red color and reveals an incredibly floral profile of rose petals and ripe strawberries. Aromatically light on its feet, with a joyous feel, on the palate the structure is more focused and compact, with mineral undertones that weave through with more a defined nature. It needs more time, but this is a fantastic red to drink over the coming 30 years.

The captivating 2020 Sperss opens with aromas of hazelnut, violet, French oak and ripe berry. The palate delivers juicy black raspberry, licorice and ground clove before closing on a saline tang while firm, fine-grained tannins remind us we’re in Serralunga. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced and energized. While it’s already tempting, give it a few more years to fully come together. Drink 2028 through 2036. Abv: 14%
