A cool and restrained lightly spiced nose of ripe red currant, plum and violet is trimmed in just enough wood to mention. The caressing middle weight flavors are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a sleek and seductive mouthfeel as well as buffers the overtly firm tannic spine of this dense and powerful effort. I like the balance but even so it's going to require at least a few years of cellaring as it's presently quite tightly wound.
One-third of the 2016 Vosne-Romanée Village was lost to mildew this year and what survived is raised in 50% new oak. It has a very pure and suave bouquet: precise red berry fruit, sous-bois and cold slate-like aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with strict tannin, clean and fresh with a gorgeous blood orange note that enlivens the tensile red cherry and strawberry fruit on the finish. There is impressive substance to this village cru.
