The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques from Domaine Denis Mortet is superb—and further confirmation that this is a wonderful vintage for the Lavaux Saint-Jacques, opening in the glass with a wonderful bouquet of sweet cassis, cherries, rich soil and wood smoke which is still quite youthfully fruit-driven. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and layered, with an authoritative chassis of rich, velvety tannins cloaked in succulent fruit, and a long, sapid finish. This is an ample, even lavish Lavaux Saint-Jacques that nonetheless remains precise and controlled, fully realizing the potential of the vintage. 2023 - 2050
Outstanding
arkedly earthy and notably floral-scented aromas of black raspberry liqueur and plum are abundantly laced with sauvage and humus elements. There is excellent size, weight and richness to the big-bodied and intensely mineral-driven flavors that brim with dry extract before exploding on the wonderfully persistent finish where a hint of wood surfaces. Like the Champeaux this should be approachable after 7 to 8 years yet if you want to see it at its peak, it will need at least 12 to 15 years. Drink: 2027+
Red fruits and cherries on the nose, but it's very closed at present. Very rich and weighty, with formidable fruit of concentration and density. Tight and less approachable than most of the Rousseau wines, but this tension suggests a fine evolution and ageing potential. At present the tannins seems to obstruct the fruit, but that will change. Very long finish.
