The 2014 Pavillon Blanc de Château Margaux is just a bit anonymous on the nose, despite encouragement. The palate is sharp on the entry, very edgy and sharp, verging on sour lemon mixed with lime and peach towards the finish. This is one of the few Bordeaux dry whites that improved with aeration and I ended up giving a higher score. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. 2018 - 2026
This lasts for minutes on the palate with incredible depth of fruit and salty highlights. Medium to full body, fresh acidity and a minerally, dried-lemon undertone. Energetic.
This is the dry white wine of Chateau Margaux, made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. 1000 cases made at 27hl/ha. This Pavillon Blanc has the highest acidity ever recorded for the wine. Pale lemon-gold in colour. Very aromatic and intense on the nose with lots of citrus, a little passion fruit and some grapefruit. There are hints of spice too on this ripe and very attractive nose. The palate has richness on entry with all those tropical fruits and sweet spices of vanilla and nutmeg. The viscosity is cut through by a line of high acidity that gives the wine a wonderful, zesty tension. This is well balanced and very intense, long and complex. Outstanding.
As with the 2015, the 2014 Pavillon Blanc is a stunning wine, and I actually prefer it to the 2015 at the moment. From 100% Sauvignon Blanc brought up mostly in barrel, this beauty offers an exotic, taut, racy style as well as loads of lime peel, Meyer lemon, and orange blossom, with a building minerality and liquid rock-like character coming through with time in the glass. Vibrant, concentrated, and beautifully balanced, you can safely drink bottles over the coming 4-5 years or cellar for a decade more. 2022 - 2032
Very chiseled in feel, this glistens with verbena and tarragon notes, followed by lemon pith and yellow apple core flavors. A zing of fleur de sel drives the talc-dusted finish. A wine of rapier cut and terrific length. Sauvignon Blanc. Drink now through 2026. 9,583 cases made.
The citrus mix on the nose is fresh fragrant and the palate starts with lime and grapefruit. The mid palate has peach and apricot richness generous complex. At the back citrus refreshes a floral mix, fragrance and charm yet tropical fruits on the finish give richness the fruit lingering on the long finish. 2016-26
"Our best white of the last 10 years," is how Paul Pontallier describes this varietal Sauvignon Blanc, made with no malolactic and 30% new oak. It's certainly one of the dry whites of the vintage: focused, chalky and pithy with notes of pink grapefruit, smoky oak and a tangy, lingering finish.
The 2014 Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux has quite an intense bouquet with aromas of honeysuckle and orange blossom, just as it showed out of barrel. It feels tightly wound, just like its red counterparts, and will benefit from a couple of years in bottle. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry—this is where all the action is. Lively and vivacious, it doles out enticing notes of dried apricot, pineapple, white peach and fennel, fanning out with abandonment on the persistent finish. What a great Pavillon Blanc! This comes recommended. Drink Date 2019-2035
The Pavillon Blanc de Margaux 2014 was elevated by a cool August that captured the acidity and the clement conditions in September. “It has the same opulence as 2011 and the freshness of 2012, but there is less quantity,” remarked Paul Pontallier. It has a fragrant bouquet with scents of honeysuckle, orange blossom and a fresh sprig of mint. The palate is ripe and focused on the entry, a white Bordeaux underpinned by a fine line of acidity, just a dash of lemongrass emerging towards the finish and lending spice. There is an endearing sense of harmony here. Mon. Pontallier is right to enthuse about this Pavillon Blanc, one of the finest in recent years. Drink: 2018 - 2030
This is yet again a wonderful white with minerals, lemon rind, white pepper and stones. Even chalky. Peach stones, too. Full-bodied yet compacted and tight. Great length. Savory, salty and serious.
