The Côtes de Castillon vineyard of famous Pomerol winemaker Denis Durantou of L'Eglise Clinet (first vintage was 2009). This 11 hectare vineyard has 25 year old vines - 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% of a new clone of Cabernet Sauvignon that Denis planted in 2009. Always modestly priced, this is a wine that gives brilliant value for money.
A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2017 Montlandrie is deep garnet-colored. It pops out of the glass with notes of redcurrant jelly, kirsch, and blackberry preserves, leading to slowly evolving notes of powdered cinnamon, star anise, dusty soil, and tobacco. The medium to full-bodied palate is achingly plush with seamless freshness supporting the bright fruit, finishing long and earthy.
Tasted at the château. Intense, deft red fruits on the nose give this wine a supple fragrance with notes of cherry blossom, ripe plums and just a hint of smoky spice. The palate is chalky and fine with an impeccable balance that leans to freshness. The fruit is cool but ripe, layering more notes of cherry and plum with a subtle hint of rosemary and almost garrigue spice. Elegant and eminently drinkable, this is a delicious glass of wine to be enjoyed over the coming five years.
Fascinating aromas of white pepper, dark berries, dark chocolate and dried flowers. Medium-bodied, tight and tannic, yet the tannins are fine and angular. Bright acidity. Shows drive and focus. Extremely well done. Better after 2022.
This has great aromatics right off the bat and a creaminess to the fruit. Yet there’s still freshness delivered by menthol notes on the finish, along with tight spices. This is a young Cabernet Sauvignon that is already pulling its weight. Firm, bright, with real finesse and confidence. Good for medium-term drinking. No frost here, which makes winemaker Denis Durantou very lucky as some parts of Castillon were pretty badly hit. Merlot picked 20-26 September, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon September 28. Production this year expected to be 43,000 bottles, 40% new oak used.
Drinking Window 2022 - 2032
Black core and dark purple crimson rim. Lovely dark cherry-chocolate aroma: both fruit and oak. Fine chalky texture is quite different from the Denis Durantou Lalande wines just tasted. More limestone? Tight and fresh, all still to come, finishing fresh.
Drink 2022-2030
Bramble freshness on the nose the start of the palate bright the tannins are fine and integrated. Ripe black fruits in the middle sweet fruit nice depth of flavour and although lighter at the back it finishes with sweet ripe fruit. 2023-33
Denis thinks that this vintage is even finer than his impressive 2016. There is serious density of flavour here and the tannins are rich and fondant with invigorating energy and power. The fruit is black and luxurious and the finish is long. This is a wine with real attitude and it will be one of the longer-lived examples on the Right Bank. It ought to offer superb value for money, too.
The 2017 Montlandrie has opened up brilliantly in bottle. Fragrant and forward on the nose it has notes of red cherry, plum skins and iron filings, a real sense of place with a lick of sweet spice. The palate is silky, with plump red fruits enlivened by streaks of acidity. There is a note of rosemary and more of the iron touch from the nose, indicating the soils and Cabernet Franc. The tannins are powdery and well integrated, allowing this complex array of fruit and savoury tones to shine. Long on the finish, this is a perfect wine to drink now and over the coming 5+ years.
This is very minerally with crushed stones and dark fruit. Medium body and tight and firm tannins. Excellent.
Montlandrie 2017 is a blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and has a deep garnet-purple color. It has a nose of baked black plums, boysenberries, and charcoal, with hints of dried herbs and damp soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is densely packed and muscular, offering firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy.
Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Montlandrie rocks up with bold blackberry preserves and plum preserves scents with hints of bay leaves, charcoal and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with black fruit and minerally accents, supported by firm, chewy tannins, finishing a little firm. Drink: 2020-2030
A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Montlandrie gives up notes of crushed black plums, red currants and black cherries with suggestions of cigar box, yeast extract, tapenade and underbrush. Medium-bodied with a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins, it has beautiful freshness and a mineral-tinged finish.
