Côte Rôtie Côte Brune, Domaine Jean-Paul Jamet 2014

Tasting Notes

Both 2014s showed well. The 2014 Côte Rôtie Côte Brune sees a touch more new oak than the classic cuvée and is aged in 20-30% new barrels. It’s always a more structured, tannic wine and requires more bottle age. Bacon fat, pepper, smoked meats and an undeniable floral character all emerge from this beautiful, concentrated and age-worthy 2014 that’s up with the crème de la crème of the vintage.

Much as with the 2014 Côte Rôtie, the Brune is very tight at the moment. Cool blue fruit and black pepper have an effortless balance on both the nose and the palate. With air it is very fragrant, but the palate remains taut and unyielding. Precise, pithy and long, give it at least three years before approaching. (TP)

I was able to taste a single barrel of what was designated for the 2014 Cote Rotie Cote Brune and it should be a big step up from the classic cuvée. Exhibiting a deep ruby/purple color as well as terrific notes of charcoal, smoked herbs, roasted meats and assorted darker fruits, this beautiful barrel sample offers plenty of fruit, solid underlying structure and outstanding length. It won't be for those seeking instant gratification but should be a terrific, classic Cote Rotie from this estate.
