This is a fragrant and very attractive mid-weight wine with plenty of ripe fruit to balance the full, dry tannins, which give it some real power on the finish. Drink or hold.
Tasted blind. Sweet – much sweeter than Alter Ego – and a little bit confected but made to be liked.
Drink 2023-2037
From the southern part of Margaux, the 2014 Château Prieure Lichine is little gem well worth seeking out. Offering lots of classic black cherry fruit, tobacco, herbs, and damp earth, it’s medium to full-bodied, impeccably balanced, and has moderate, chalky tannins on the finish. Like most 2014s, it’s already drinking nicely, yet is going to keep for 15 years or so. Tasted twice. 2018 - 2033
On the herbal side, with distinct bay and savory notes leading the way, followed by lightly steeped red currant and damson plum notes. Shows a good streak of black tea through the finish, where a cedar thread appears. Best from 2018 through 2024. 15,000 cases made.
The 2014 Prieure-Lichine has a reserved, slightly tertiary/gravel-tinged bouquet that takes time to develop the fruit behind it. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a gentle grip in the mouth, but attenuating slightly towards the finish that just needs to develop a little more frisson. Probably best suited for short-term drinking rather than long-term, but you never know. Drink Date 2019-2030
The Château Prieuré-Lichine 2014 has a rather standoffish nose at first, but with a few swirls of the glass it opens up to reveal blackcurrant, raspberry and cassis scents with a light estuary influence just underneath (perhaps a whiff from the Gironde?) The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, lighter in style than other Margaux, but elegant and focused, the finish very harmonious with assiduously integrated new oak. Very fine. Tasted twice with consistent notes. Drink: 2018 - 2035.
Beautiful concentration and depth to this red with blueberry, blackberry and licorice character. Full and structured with strength and finesse.
Sumptuous nose with a strong mineral element. Drier than most with less juice. But there is drive here. And some real direction. Just a little dry on the end, but impressive persistence. Drink 2022-2035
