Richebourg, Domaine Gros Frère et Soeur 2020

Tasting Notes

A pungent nose of firm reduction and wood toast lead to gorgeously textured, dense and muscular flavors that possess both excellent length and minerality on the powerful and palate coating finish. This is markedly more structured and while it's virtually always true with a classic Richebourg, this will be no exception in its need for extended aging. 2035+

From three plots: a 2016 plantation, 40 year old and 60 year old, the last vinified as whole bunches. The oak (100% new wood) comes out on the nose but is well married with the concentration of fruit. Waiting for the detail to come out, a wealth of fruit but this potentially powerful Richebourg remains opaque at the moment. Finishes on the wood.

Tasted by Charles Curtis MW. A superb bottle of Richebourg, this shows concentrated cherry and cassis fruit, with a menthol and rose petal edge, plus just a bit of peppery spice. The wine shows remarkably fresh acidity (particularly given the vintage), but there is no lack of density or structure here. Lovely. The fruit is from the 0.6ha parcel in Les Varoilles and is fermented after a cold soak with 30-40% whole-cluster, then aged in new casks. 2023-2040
