Jean-Marie Guffens of White Burgundy fame recently bought Chateau Closiot in Barsac and produces a cuvee called "Les Dames de Bonneau" in tiny volumes in great vintages only. Jean-Marie is not a shy man and his aim is to make the greatest wine of the appellation and price it accordingly.
The 2022 has a sugar level of 190 g/litre. By contrast a great vintage of Yquem is at around 150. Only 7 barrels have been made of this - so only 175 cases in total. It will be bottled in 75cl and halves with diam corks
Jean-Marie Guffens masterfully grasped the essence of this vintage. By delaying his harvest, he achieved an impressive concentration of his grapes while preserving their remarkable freshness and acidity. This approach allowed him to craft one of the standout vintage wines. The 2022 Les Dames de Bonneau reveals a deep, powerful and complex bouquet of apricots, quince, smoke, spices, spring flowers and ripe orchard fruits, followed by a dense, full-bodied, textural and layered palate, with a massive level of concentration, superb chalky dry extracts and an endless, ethereal and refined finish. While expressive and vibrant at this stage, it should be kept in the cellar for 5 to 6 years before it is opened, and it can age gracefully over the next 30 to 50 years. With 186 grams per liter of residual sugar, it is one of the best wines produced at this address. Drink 2030-2074
Opulent and bombastic on both the nose and the palate, you can sense the sweetness on the nose with layers of crystalised ginger, marmalade, honeyed peaches and pure maple syrup on the nose. The palate is unctuous, pure saffron, honey and spice. Full bodied yet balanced thanks to fresh acidity, it is a feat of winemaking. This big, seductive Barsac is not for the feinthearted, but the structure and intensity suggest it will live a very, very long life. Impressive.
The 2022 Les Dames de Bonneau, with 190 g/L residual sugar, is pale to medium straw in color. It wafts out with notes of Marcona almonds, pear tart, and fallen leaves, leading to a core of juicy melon, apricots, and honeycomb. The palate is an atom bomb of sweetness, delivering layer upon layer of honeyed stone fruit layers and a fantastically opulent finish.
