Aromas of blackberries, dried mushrooms and iodine. Sweet tobacco and cloves to boot. Full body and a creamy texture that the limestone imparts. Very persistent. Impressive drive and precision. Try in 2022.
The 2015 L'If, the sibling of Le Pin, of course, has a high-toned iodine-tinged bouquet with floral scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, gentle grip, nicely structured with an attractive cedar- and black-pepper-tinged finish that shows more weight and density than its peers. It is a little heady but it is still well crafted. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.
Tasted blind. Intense and spicy and zesty with real energy and not too much exaggeration. My fellow tasters criticised it for being too stalky and high-acid and not tasting of Le Pin! 14.5%
Drink 2025-2038
This is very intense and mineral on the palate with so much salt and white pepper character. Full and powerful. A great and structured L’If.
This new property is owned and managed by Jacques Thienpont of Le Pin. It consists of 7 hectares of which 5 are next to Troplong Mondot. The encepagement is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and the name comes from the French word for a Yew tree. It was not yet available to taste in April 2016.
