Cotes du Rhone Equivoque, Domaine Jean-Paul Jamet 2022

Tasting Notes

I tasted two separately vinified samples that will form the blend of the 2022 Côtes-du-Rhône Équivoque. The 100% whole-bunch Cognet lieu-dit displays glossy blueberry and black cherry fruit alongside grapefruit and crushed rocks. On the other side, the Tartaras sample is more compact and structured, offering a bit more tension. If all goes well, this will be a terrific Côtes-du-Rhône packed with substance and complexity. (Drink between 2023-2028)

A tasting of the two parcels that make up the blend show a structural, tight, quite northern style this year. The Cognet parcel is all whole bunch, with remarkably good acidity. It’s really quite austere, with powerful tannins, finishing on juicy, fresh blackcurrant fruit. It feels cool, with low alcohol and good energy. The Tartaras parcel is also grown on schist, but deeper than Cognet: it's rounded, slightly richer, but with lovely freshness, with quite cold, cutting tannins. This will need fairly long ageing to really deliver its promise – treat it like a Côte-Rôtie in that regard, not a Côtes du Rhône. (Drink between 2029-2037)
