Nuits St Georges Les Lavières, Domaine Jean Grivot 2020

Tasting Notes

This 0.62ha parcel on the fractured limestone 'roofing tiles' (lavières) was planted in 1964, next to Comte Liger-Belair. The result in 2020 was more dark fruit than bright, yet it is not lacking a mineral edge nor a gentle floral character. The impression on the palate is bigger in general, with more tannin and grip than either of the other village-level wines from Nuits. Substantial and satisfying finish. (Drink between 2025-2040)

There is just enough reduction present to partially blur the nuance on the ripe red and dark berry fruit aromas. There is equally good freshness to the even sleeker and brighter middle weight flavors that possess a velvet-textured mid-palate while exhibiting a saliva-inducing, persistent and well-balanced finale. This excellent effort just makes on feel like drinking it. In sum, this is a very good Nuits villages. (Drink starting 2027)

Heady bright dark purple, the nose is much more lively than the Vosne, with darker fruit but nothing cooked. Damsons. Big firm tannins again, built up by the acidity, but such a wealth of attractive deep red fruit alongside. Fine finish.
