House of Arras Rose 2017

Tasting Notes

The 2017 Methode Traditionelle Rose is led by 73% Pinot Noir (much of it from the Coal River Valley—red-fruited and supple with a natural rosewater character—with some from the Upper Derwent), and the balance is Chardonnay (East Coast and Derwent). This is lovely. Tension and texture abound in the same glass, and the wine is persistent and chalky, with a creamy mid-palate of red fruit and some exotic spices that feature on the edges. There are crushed shells and toasted fennel in the main, with petrichor, raspberry pip and licorice. I love the way this wine performs in the mouth: it is tightly packed, fine and very long, even in its flavor balance. It's a sensational wine. Five percent of the Chardonnay contribution fermented in first-use French oak. The wine spent seven years on the lees, and the dosage was 3.1 grams per liter. The pH here is 3.03, with 6.7 grams per liter of acidity and 13% alcohol. It comes highly recommended. Drink: 2026-2037

Aromas of unripe strawberries, grapefruit, rose petals, brioche, sea spray and crushed stones. The palate is dry and finely textured with creamy mousse and vibrant acidity, giving notes of orange blossoms, pastry cream, hazelnuts and oyster shells. Elegant and refined. Drink or hold.

“73/27% pinot noir/chardonnay fermented in a combination of stainless steel and new French oak barriques (5.5%); dosage 3.1g/L, disgorged November '24. Energetic, with a superfine bead and mousse and aromas of red apple, red cherry and redcurrant with layers of soft spice, grilled nuts, sea spray, stone and distant wafts of rosewater and a suggestion of Turkish delight. Coal River pinot leads here with some Upper Derwent and Ouse fruit to, as Ed Carr says, 'pull the sides in and tighten it up'. There is a layered complexity to this wine that is just gorgeous, and a sapid, minerally driveline that seems to pull the wine across the palate. Finishes long and graceful with an impressive length of flavour. It's a stunner”

Very pale salmon colour, a very delicately coloured rosé. Discreet, subtle bouquet framing smoky, toasty and nutty aromas, with background traces of pastry and a hint of dried strawberry. The wine is bright and energetic in the mouth, delicate yet intense, with piercing flavour that is layered and complex, dry and refreshing at the finish and entertaining to the last drop. The finish is extremely long with beautifully judged phenolics adding structure and drive. An outstanding spakling rosé.
