This good value classed growth Pauillac was formerly known as Mouton Baronne Philippe and has been in Rothschild ownership since 1933. It is made by the same winemaking team as Mouton Rothschild. The 80 hectare vineyard contains around 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Vines are an average of 39 years old. A new winery was completed in 2021.
The 2025 vintage is composed of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Picked September 9th to 20th. ABV 13%. Matured in 50% new oak.
A blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2025 d'Armailhac bursts with aromas of dark berries, violets and lilac. Medium- to full-bodied, with a sweet core of fruit, tangy acids and a youthfully chewy finish, this is a comparatively structured young d'Armailac.
The 2025 d'Armailhac was picked between September 9 and 20 and matured in 50% new oak. This has fine definition and purity on the nose, though perhaps it does not quite grab you like some recent vintages. This plays it "cool". The palate is medium-bodied with fine, slightly grainy tannins that frame the blackberry and cassis fruit. Quite peppery on the finish, less flamboyant than some vintages, though very refined and quite long. Good potential. Maybe it has something up its sleeve?Drink 2030 - 2055
Bright and peppery on the nose, there are herbal tones set against fresh, primary red fruit. The palate leads with summer pudding fruit and a little baked vanilla. There is a light caramel note to the oak, which sits slightly at odds with the fresh, lithe fruit and granular tannins for now. It will be interesting to see how this comes together in barrel.
Very polished, with fine tannins that caress your palate while the fruit is ripe but al dente, with red currants, plums and peach undertones. Medium body. Refined and intense finish. 67% cabernet sauvignon, 21%, 10% cabernet franc, and 2% petit verdot.
The 2025 d'Armailhac is powerful and tightly wound. Brisk acids and incisive tannins shape a young Pauillac that is going to need at least a few years in bottle to come together. There's gorgeous energy and tension here. It's a classic d'Armailhac that leans into Cabernet Sauvignon, with an extra burst of red and blood orange-tinged fruit that really comes alive over time. That's a very appealing combination in my book. 2033 - 2045
