A Dynamic Duo from Yalumba

Founded in 1849 in the Barossa region of South Australia, Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family owned winery. This estate has been making fantastic wines at all price points for many years although they are perhaps better known here in the UK for the more affordable end of their range. At the top end, it is fair to say that their ‘Rare and Fine’ range has lived somewhat in the shadow of other great Australian winemaking companies, simply due to a focus on domestic distribution.

Today, Yalumba’s outlook is much more international which means that these excellent examples of the Barossa and Coonawarra regions of South Australia can now be enjoyed over here too. These are areas with incredibly complex geology that produce wines of unique style and character. They are also a great deal more restrained and elegant than you might expect.

The two wines on offer today are both from the 2013 vintage. The Menzies is a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra. The soils are red and the fruit is dark – a brooding wine that is full bodied yet well balanced. The Signature is a Cabernet/Shiraz blend sourced from five key vineyards in the Barossa Valley from vines planted between 1925 and 1969. This is a sumptuous wine that is all about complexity and texture.

All wines are packed in 6 bottle cases. Minimum order – 12 bottles

Menzies is the name of Yalumba's Coonawarra estate, which is almost entirely devoted to Cabernet Sauvignon. Like most of the Yalumba wines, the oak levels have been pared back in recent vintages, allowing this wine's cassis fruit to to shine. Hints of tobacco, bay leaf and sage bring complexity, while the tannins are fine, adding a softly dusty feel to the long finish.

A classic blend of Cabernet and Shiraz, this is cedary and complex upon opening, easily mixing cassis, plum and blackberry with vanilla and baking spices. On the palate, it's dense and concentrated yet slightly reserved, suggesting rather than screaming its potential. A long, mocha-tinged finish wraps things up, combining dusty tannins with mouthwatering acids. Drink 2020–2030+.

Deep garnet-purple, the 2013 The Signature (Cabernet Sauvignon / Shiraz) has very youthful, pure black fruits aromas with a pronounced black plum and black currant nose with underlying pepper, Provence herbs and licorice suggestions. Big, dense and profoundly expressive in the mouth, the palate is firmly constructed with chewy tannins and great persistence. This is just starting to open, so forget it for 3-5 years and drink it over the next twenty.
