Conducting group wine tastings during lockdown is challenging for obvious reasons but a tiny select few of us were able to re-taste this brilliant wine again this week in a socially distanced environment and can recommend it without reservation.
It would be absolutely no exaggeration to say that this is categorically the best English wine we have ever tasted!
If that’s not reason enough to buy some of it to bring a bit of cheer to your home during the ongoing shutdown, we have also managed to purchase a parcel of this wine at a significantly discounted price.
We have long been fans of Nyetimber’s sparkling wines. This English producer, based in the picturesque South Downs of West Sussex, is now well established on the world stage and their wines regularly outscore Grande Marque Champagnes in blind tastings. We have tasted a fair few English sparkling wines over recent years, often testing them against more famous Champagne names. In our view there is no question that 2013 Tillington not only outshines any English domestic competition but can challenge some of the really famous and much more expensive vintage wines from France.
The decision to make Tillington, their single vineyard prestige cuvée, came about when head winemaker, Cherie Spriggs, discovered the extraordinary potential of a parcel of Pinot Noir with outstanding fruit character at their Tillington site. The vineyard lies just west of Petworth on a gently south facing slope. When travel is permitted again it’s worth a look; especially as there is an excellent pub, ‘The Horse Guards Inn’, in the hamlet of Tillington which is a great place to stop for lunch.
The 2013 is Nyetimber’s third vintage of Tillington (after 2009 and 2010) and is a blend of 76% Pinot Noir and 26% Chardonnay. We have tasted it here at Farr Vintners several times now and it seems to just get better and better.
This is an English wine which truly deserves its place on the world stage!

The third bottling of this single vineyard expression of English sparkling wine is a blend of 76% Pinot Noir and 24% Chardonnay. Just 8,000 bottles were produced of the 2013 vintage. Pale lemon in colour, this has a vibrant and expressive nose of citrus, baked apple, and fresh bread. The palate is rich and creamy, with more body and power than the 2010 at this stage. The mousse is persistent yet fine, effortlessly carrying the intense citrus, toast and flinty flavours at the core. The acidity is bright and mouthwatering, adding a savoury touch to the fruit. However, this is perfectly in harmony due to the ripeness at the core and creaminess of the palate. The finish is one of golden apples, freshly baked pastries and just a touch of struck match. Absolutely magnificent - the best English wine we have ever tasted.
18.5+ points, Farr Vintners
Chalk, apple blossom and stone play on the subtle nose, and a touch of flint suggests a hint of smokiness. The fine foam fills the palate with subtle depth that combines the generosity of fruit, the richness of chalk and the buffered vein of vibrant freshness, clothed in flavors of Red Delicious apple and lemon shortbread. Elegance, finesse and subtle power form a disarming trinity that convinces with sheer quality. A lovely, creamy, exquisite fizz for grown-ups who can tune into subtlety. The finish is long and rewarding.
