On The Verge(t) Of Greatness

The 2016 white Burgundies are a triumph in more ways than one. Not only are they excellent wines but it is somewhat miraculous that such quality was achieved, given how Mother Nature conspired at almost every turn to make it a hellish vintage. Hailstorms and frost were everywhere across the region and many estates reported reduced yields of up to 50%. What was left were wines that Jancis Robinson MW calls “…good quality in a classic style – that is, without any particular extremes of acid, alcohol, body or fruit concentration.”

Given the difficult weather conditions, it is a relief for us to be able to bring you Jean-Marie Guffens’ superb range of 2016 Verget. Every year we meticulously go through his whole range cherry-picking only the best wines to offer to you and for only the second time since we began importing Verget back in 1992, we can bring you some of these 2016s in magnums and jeroboams as well.

In a market where Burgundy prices continue to creep ever upwards, it is extremely refreshing to be able to offer wines of such exceptional quality at such reasonable prices. In fact, the most expensive wine in today’s offer is just £200 a case in bond. It is easy to spend four or five times these amounts on other white Burgundies that are nowhere near as good as these.

In buying Verget, not only are you avoiding the high prices of other Burgundian producers but you are also minimising another all-too-common white Burgundy issue – that of oxidation. All of the wines offered today (with the exception of the magnums and jeroboams) are under screwcap, which is a far more practical option for wines that should be enjoyed in their youth.

“The nose is bright fresh the start of the palate has a citrus mix but there is richness in the middle ripe pears depth of flavour. The back palate is crisp bright crunchy apple sweeter on the finish some ripe pink grapefruit. 2017-22”

““This plot is located in the village of Vergisson within the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. The exposure is to the East. The soil is clay-limestone with many stones. The vines are on average 40 years old. This was one of the last vineyards to be harvested in 2016 because the grapes were very healthy and this allowed them to reach a "beautiful maturity". The free run juices were vinified all in barrel - of which 20% were in new oak. The fermentations were completed from mid-January. The elevage continued in barrel for a further 5 months with regular "batonnage". Total production : 600 cases. Stone-fruited and vibrant on the nose, this is ripe and juicy while retaining superb freshness. The palate follows from this, with peach and pineapple as well as cooler pear tamed by fresh acidity and given richness by a light creaminess. This wine is youthful, juicy and approachable, a real delight to drink in its youth.”

““This plot of vines is located at the top of the Roche de Vergisson surrounded by the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. The exposure is to the East and the soil is very calcareous. The free run juices were vinified 100% in barrels of which 20% were new. The fermentations took place until mid-January and then the wine was aged in barrel for a further six months. Yields were 40% less than normal so the total production was only 250 cases in 2016. With ripe citrus peel, pear and peach on the nose, this is aromatic and yet focused. There is a touch of struck match and spice that adds to the complexity and savoury appeal. The palate brings weight of ripe stone fruit to the fore, layered with hints of cream and butter to flesh out the mid-palate. The finish adds a cut of refreshing acidity that lifts the fruit into notes of peach and lemon blossom, with just a touch of smoke coming through. Long and smooth-textured on the finish, this provides pure drinking pleasure now and layers of complexity that add to the intrigue.”

“Saint-Véran "Vigne de Saint-Claude" is located in the village of Prissé but it is very close to the vines of Pouilly-Fuissé from Vergisson. These vines are about 50 years old, the soil is clayey-limestone and very stony. This cuvée is composed only of free run juice fermented all in barrels with 20% of new oak. The fermentations were completed at the end of December and the elevage in barrel lasted for an additional 6 months. This year, this plot was the first to be harvested as the balance between the level of sugars in the grapes and the acidity was judged to be perfect. Production : 350 cases. Bright lemon colour in the glass. A pure weight of lemon curd and light grapefruit aromas on the nose, this is spicy and ripe. Chock-full of stone fruit on the palate, there is a savoury, mineral undertone that drives the freshness of the wine. Clean, refreshing and full of peach blossom on the finish. Fine, smooth and refined.”

“As in previous years, this cuvée comes mainly from the plot "Côte Rôtie" in the village of Davayé whose name is forbidden to be used on the label. There are also some grapes from old vines in the "Terres Noires" vineyard. The Terres Noires gives richness and opulence whilst the Côte Rôtie brings tension and minerality to the wine. The yields in both of these two vineyards were tiny in 2016 due to hail. The density of the wine is exceptional as well as the sugar / acid balance. This cuvée was produced only from free run juices and was vinified all in barrels with 25% new oak. The alcoholic fermentation took place until the end of December. The elevage lasted about 7 more months with regular "batonnages". The resultant wine is very mineral and yet very fat and Jean-Marie Guffens believes it to be one of the great successes of the vintage. Total production was only 350 cases of which, as usual, Farr Vintners had the world's biggest allocation. This standout wine has once again greatly exceeded its potential. Spicy, smoky flint, nutmeg and vanilla on the nose are bolstered with notes of lemon and lime, pineapple and even a little blossom. The palate has a rich concentration and deep power of fruit at the core. Ripe citrus and cool stone fruits pair off in harmony, lifted by zingy, fresh acidity that give the creamy weight of fruit a lightness through to the finish. This power is driven through to the finish, which fleshes out with riper peach, clove, nutmeg and vanilla, a light toastiness and the creaminess of lees work. Very long and fine. A knockout once again.”

“The nose is light and fresh the start of the palate has the racy crispness of flint and lime. There is a richer feel in the middle tropical fruits and nectarines the richer fruit underpinned by freshness the finish is long steely, citrusy and mineral. 2018-23”

93 points, Derek Smedley MW

“The Les Combes vineyard's exposure is both to the south and the north and consequently produces a wine of beautiful balance. The proportion of southerly exposed grapes is 70% with 30% exposed to the north. These vines are over 70 years old on average with a low yield of small grapes. The wine was made only from free run juice which was vinified in barrels - with 25% new. The fermentations continued until the end of December, followed by elevage in barrel for about 7 months. Jean-Marie Guffens believes this to be the most finely balanced wine of the vintage at Verget. Total production 400 cases. Pale lemon colour and an enticing nose of white pepper, vanilla and pure poached pears. Texturally viscous initially, layers of fresh acidity bring crunchy pears and juicy peaches to the fore. Sweet, smoky spices linger underneath the fruit in harmony through to a long, fine, refined finish.”

“Mineral, white flowers the nose is fragrant and fresh the start of the palate lean and bright. The citrusy freshness is underpinned by sweet fruits a mix of tropical fruits a hint of white peach but the back palate has mineral freshness length of flavour. 2017-23”

93 points, Derek Smedley MW

“The Pouilly-Fuissé "La Roche" vineyard in Vergisson is exposed to the south-east with a shallow soil that is rich in limestone. It is one of the most beautiful vineyards of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. Jean-Marie Guffens believes that the quality of fruit from this vineyard allows him to make the most mineral and precise, but also the richest wines that Verget produces. This wine was produced from only free run juice was vinified completely in barrels with 25% new. The fermentations were completed at the end of December. The elevage continued for 7 months in barrels. Total production in 2016 was 600 cases. Bright lemon in colour and powerful on the nose, buttered peaches and lemon curd leap out of the glass, supported by vanilla pod and toasted spices. Unctuous fruit bursts through on the palate, with peaches and pears, with even a hint of mango coming through before wonderfully refreshing acidity lifts the whole palate. From this notes of lemon and apple blossom turn creamy and smoky thanks to the judicious use of oak. The acidity and spice drive the palate through to the very long finish, which is complex due to the layers of flavour that come through from crisp citrus through to exotic fruit and creamy oak. A superb wine in 2016.”
