Château L’Evangile is one of Pomerol’s oldest properties, with a history that can be traced back to the 18th century. It occupies some of the appellation’s finest terroir on the south west border of Pomerol, lying between Pétrus to the north and Cheval Blanc to the south. It covers just under 15 hectares.
We have access to some very limited stocks of the 1982 vintage, released ex-château this year. The price is £2,000 per three bottles in bond. The 1982 vintage needs no introduction: the finest of the decade and one of the greats of the 20th Century. The wines at the top are still drinking well.
Recent tasting notes are hard to come by. In 2009, when he was arguably at the peak of both his powers and his influence, Robert Parker scored the wine 98 points: “The complexity of the nose alone is worth a special admission price.” Andrew Jefford, writing for Decanter in 2018, scores it 97: “It’s still possible to pick out plums in its cascade of flavour amid the warm, meaty depths. An outstanding wine.” John Gilman is at 94 points in 2022: “deep, full-bodied and plush on the attack, with a rock solid core of fruit, lovely balance and grip, excellent complexity and a long, modestly tannic and class finish” whilst, most recently, Jeff Leve of the Wine Cellar Insider is on all cylinders with 98 points: “Compelling in every sense of the word, 1982 L’Evangile is Pomerol at its best.”
Recorked at the château in 2001, and packed in wooden cases of three bottles, the stock is lying in Bordeaux. This, and all Evangile currently available, is below.
