The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets displays pretty aromas of dried flowers, small wild berries, rose petals and espresso roast that are subtly framed by a deft touch of spicy new wood. On the plate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with simultaneously the most depth and the most finesse of any wine in the Clerget cellar, structured around fine, powdery tannin and succulent acids. It's showing very well.
There is an overt spiciness to the even more restrained nose that blends notes of both red and dark cherry, plum, violet, lavender and a whiff of warm earth. The sleek, intense and chiseled middle weight flavors flash ample minerality before terminating in a youthfully austere and wonderfully persistent finish that, like the Clos du Verseuil, is impeccably well-balanced.
