Banyuls, Domaine du Duy 1973

Tasting Notes

100% Grenache Noir. Cousin of Piétri Géraud, same family as the Parc'es. Aged in barriques bordelaises. The estate doesn't exist anymore.
Healthy ruby with some evolution. Sweet and raisiny but without that much depth.

This vintage has a really smoky nose, full of saddle leather and cigar wrapper, feeling very much like a digestif in its warming, hearty profile. The palate is peppery and powerful, a grip giving textural intrigue and subduing the sweetness. This has a spicy, more linear profile than some vintages, crunchy and long on the finish.

Bottled in 2012, Domaine du Duy is from the same family as Domaine de la Rectorie and the wine was purchased in a Bordeaux barrel. The 1973 Banyuls has a light garnet core with a russet rim. I have to say, here I found the nose a little fatigued and grubby. The palate is better, with a sweet aniseed and licorice entry. It is missing a little backbone, but is cleaner than the nose implied with a dry, nicely focused finish. Tasted December 2012.
