Made in a lighter style, the fully mature 1999 reveals notes of beef blood, roasted herbs, black truffles, damp earth and black currants intermixed with hints of espresso and spice box. This medium-bodied, velvety textured, lush La Mission should hold nicely for a decade in a cold cellar.
Aromas of black licoice, mineral and berries follow through to medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a fruity finish. Not quite as good as from barrel. Best after 2004. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 5830 cases made.
50% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc. This year we found La Mission to be every bit as good as Haut Brion with deep colour, rich earthy flavours, plum and blackcurrant fruit and a lovely creamy texture. There is serious weight behind it and a long powerful finish. A big wine.
