CDP l'Envol, Domaine de la Charbonnière 2010

Tasting Notes

The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape L'Envol (same blend) comes across as slightly more oaky than the 2009, but it is obviously a year younger. It displays similar blueberry fruit with some meatiness and charcoal notes. It is full-bodied, dense, and seems to be somewhat atypical at present, but I am sure it will round into form with another 3-4 years of bottle age.

Even better than the ’09 and aged in a new demi-muid as opposed to older, small barrels, the 2010 Domaine de la Charbonnière Châteauneuf-du-Pape L'envol boast a massive bouquet of violets, chocolate, spice, earth, and decadent blackberry. This is followed by a substantial wine that’s beautifully fruited, possesses a round, fleshy texture, and a very long finish. It will be interesting to see how this evolves, but my initial impression is that this will require time to fully integrate and flesh out.

Swirling, ample black fruits. Unabounded energy, gleaming tannins. Lots to enjoy. Drink 2014-2033. 5 stars.
