Tasting Notes

An opaque purple color is followed by notes of graphite, mulberries, blueberries and flowers. The 2008 is broad, savory and medium to full-bodied with sweet tannins, decent acidity, a textured, complex mouthfeel and no hard edges. It, too, should drink nicely for 10-15 years.

The 2008 Le Dôme is turning into a really quite lovely Saint Émilion. Now at a decade old, this has arrived at a sweet spot, atypically quite classic in style. As I remarked in 2012 when I last tasted it, this Le Dôme sports earthy tobacco-tinged red fruit on the nose, the iodine and cassis element having ebbed away. There is wonderful freshness here, frankly, not a million miles away from Figeac in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite sensual in style with a fine backbone, open and generous, with commendable complexity on the finish. It is a little abrupt on the finish but otherwise, Jonathan Maltus and his team oversaw a quite delicious Le Dôme that is ageing with grace. 2018 - 2035

Concentrated black fruit power is in evidence on the nose, the fleshy black plum enriched by sloe. This richness is balanced by bilberry and bramble freshness but with ripe tannins the finish is rich and fat, full of flavour.

Deep, dark and reserved. Tight, textured with dark fruit notes. Plentiful tannins finely honed. Well handled extraction. Subdued but with an edge of finesse.

A blend of 75% Cabernet Franc and 25% Merlot, it displays an ethereal elegance allied with substantial flavor authority and intensity, seemingly regardless of vintage conditions. This 7-acre vineyard boasts no other than Angelus as one of its most prestigious neighbors. Enormous quantities of berry fruit intermixed with sweet, damp forest floor, graphite, licorice, and oak notes are found in this intense, full-bodied, supremely elegant wine. Sadly, there are fewer than 1,000 cases in 2008. It should drink well for two decades or more. This is the winery that made everyone recognize what Jonathan Maltus was doing in St.-Emilion. The expatriate from England produces this cuvee, which may possess the highest percentage of Cabernet Franc in the St.-Emilion appellation.
