A somewhat funky nose is composed of lactic and wood notes. Otherwise there is excellent richness to the medium weight flavors that are shaped and supported by a firm acid spine, all wrapped in an intensely mineral-inflected finale that displays solid depth. This mouth coating, serious and overtly powerful effort is at once impressive but awkward and it’s hard to say if it will clean up with a few years of age.
Depth of fruit the nose is rich the palate creamy, fleshy, buttery with ripe greengage and white peach. There is balance bright at the back lemon fresh a mineral streak aromatic and smoky. Drink 2016-2022
Creamy white stone fruit and ripe lemon curd on the nose, this pure but aromatic wine is bright in the glass. The palate is fresh with acidity but layered by creamy, juicy peaches, pears and a little ripe melon. Buttery texture is refreshed by that cleansing acidity that lifts this finish with notes of peach and lemon blossom. A vibrant and yet still juicy Macon. The 2014 vintage has a tension and structure brings layers to the wine which promise longevity and add supreme balance.
Strong reduction blocks an evaluation of the nose but there is good density and plenty of punch to the mineral-inflected, intense and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent depth and length. This is a seriously good and age-worthy wine for its level and highly recommended. Top value
Producer note: Please see Maison Verget below for general vintage details. However one important difference is that Guffens noted that he picked extremely slowly and did not finish until the second half of October when most growers started in the first week of September! The wines reviewed below had just been racked and sulfured so they were reduced. Note that owner Jean-Marie Guffens said that he has moved to 100% Diam (composite) corks effective with the 2011 vintage.
