Made in a soft, but not over-ripe style, the deep ruby/plum-tinged 2003 reveals broad, sexy notes of vanilla, black cherry jam, dried herbs, and sweet currants. This fleshy, round, low acid, seductive, luscious effort will provide pleasure over the next decade. Only 1,250 cases were produced, and the 2003 tipped the scales at 13.5% alcohol.
Soft and seductive. This is very serious indeed. Exciting stuff. This small producer makes fine handmade wines.
Mid purplish crimson, meaty nose with more layers than the rest. There is a depth that is lacking in the other St Emilions. Serious stuff.
A terrific St.-Emilion, the 2003 boasts blockbuster power and tremendous richness, yet also freshness and surprising elegance for such a hot year. A dense purple color is followed by a glorious nose of espresso roast, sweet blackberry jam, plums, and figs. Full-bodied, rich, and multilayered, with tremendous purity as well as length, it should be drinkable early in life, yet last for 15+ years.
With some parcels planted in clay and limestone, the 2003 Rol Valentin continues the succession of outstanding offerings from this garagiste. A dense opaque purple color is followed by glorious aromas of chocolate, blackberries, cassis, cherries, and flowers. This is an opulent, full-bodied St.-Emilion with great intensity, tremendous harmony, and a seamless finish. Because of its low acidity and integrated tannin, this thrilling offering should drink well when released, and last for 12-15 years.
