Blockier and even more textural than this year's Bienvenues, the 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with notes of oranges, peaches, ripe pears, white flowers, wheat toast and smoke. Full-bodied, rich and powerful, it's thick and muscular, with considerable concentration, lively acids despite its size, and a long, resonant finish.
Glowing primrose. Immediately a nose of majesty, more demonstrative than the Bienvenues, a substantial block of pure deep white fruit, significantly more weight and power in a chiselled white block. It really depends on what you want between these two. Time is needed to be sure that the power of the Bâtard will deliver a wine to equal the grace of the Bienvenues.
There is an elemental freshness here that is truly lovely, with ripe William pear and floral notes, plus a suggestion of citrus and silk; there is incredible balance here for a Bâtard. Bravo! Above the Bienvenues on the Puligny side, this is located just down the slope from the Montrachet of the Marquis de Laguiche. It faces southeast and Riffault insists: 'this isn't south-facing'.
