Tasting Notes

The 2014 Barolo La Serra is bright, floral and energetic, with all of the sinewy tension that is typical of this site. I would cellar the 2014 for at least a few years to allow some of the angular contours to soften. There is a good deal of inner sweetness that will emerge in time. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, mint and dried cherry all grace this expressive, savory Barolo from Roberto Voerzio. (Drink between 2024-2039)

A very fine and aromatic red with strawberries, flowers and lemons. Tight and focused with firm, silky tannins. A long, bright finish with a pretty backbone of fine tannins. Drink in 2020 and onwards.

The 2014 Barolo la Serra is the most rigid and closed of the three single-vineyard selections I tasted this year. This wine requires the most nudging and patience, but all the while you are reminded that the best is still to come. Cassis, white cherry, grilled herb and crushed white stone or pencil shaving rise to the top. Those aromas are impeccably focused and sharp. At this young stage, there are few curves or soft sides to this impenetrable Barolo. I have extended the drinking window accordingly, because it will need more time to flesh out and soften.
