Easily one of the top wines in the vintage, the incredible 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Quet comes from the northern part of the appellation and is made from 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre. Full-bodied, decadent and layered, with fabulous mid-palate depth and building tannin and structure, it knocks it out of the park with it ripe black raspberry, roasted meats, chocolate, licorice and toasted spice aromas and flavors. While this might take a back seat to the 2010 and 2007, it’s an awesome wine that will have 15-20 years of longevity.
The brother-sister pair of Christine and Daniel Chaussy has been consistently producing some of the top wines in any vintage for a number of years now. And, with these 2012s and 2013s, that trend doesn’t appear to be stopping anytime soon. Covering a little over 20 acres, they pull from vineyards exclusively in the northern part of the appellation, in the lieux-dits of Cabrieres, Boilauzon, Palestor, La Gardiole and Pignan. They make an impressive white and three red Châteauneuf du Papes, and the winemaking here is a blend of modern and traditional, with no destemming but aging in a combination of different size barrels, some of which can be new. Regardless of how you classify it, the results speak for themselves and these are some incredible wines.
