Tasting Notes

Blockier and even more textural than this year's Bienvenues, the 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with notes of oranges, peaches, ripe pears, white flowers, wheat toast and smoke. Full-bodied, rich and powerful, it's thick and muscular, with considerable concentration, lively acids despite its size, and a long, resonant finish.

William Kelley, Wine Advocate, June 2021

Glowing primrose. Immediately a nose of majesty, more demonstrative than the Bienvenues, a substantial block of pure deep white fruit, significantly more weight and power in a chiselled white block. It really depends on what you want between these two. Time is needed to be sure that the power of the Bâtard will deliver a wine to equal the grace of the Bienvenues.

Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy, October 2021

There is an elemental freshness here that is truly lovely, with ripe William pear and floral notes, plus a suggestion of citrus and silk; there is incredible balance here for a Bâtard. Bravo! Above the Bienvenues on the Puligny side, this is located just down the slope from the Montrachet of the Marquis de Laguiche. It faces southeast and Riffault insists: 'this isn't south-facing'. (Drink between 2025-2040)
