There is little critical review yet of the 2023 vintage, but chez Jadot they are very happy with both quantity and quality of the latest releases – something we will not be able to say next year with the very low-yielding 2024s.

2023 was a warm vintage overall, but much of the heat can be accounted to early warmth before the growing season started and late season heat that caused rapid ripening of the grapes. Flowering and fruit set took place in good conditions, giving high yield potential to the vines, so much so that some growers chose to take one or more green harvests and still came out with average to above average yields. This potential fruit needed more energy to get ripe, leaving some vineyards lagging behind as the growing season progressed. However, ripening progressed quickly at the end of the growing season: the second half of August started with a heatwave and there was another prolonged one in September, with pickers rapidly bringing in fruit in mid-30s daytime temperatures. The whites were picked from the end of August, with reds coming in through the first 2-3 weeks of September. Picking dates were important and catching both sugar and flavour ripeness at their optimal level was a balancing act.

Stylistically the wines reflect a sunny vintage: both red and white are glossy, ripe and approachable with good concentration. The alcohols are moderate but in a modern banding, roughly 13% for whites and 13.5%+ for reds: this is not a blousy, overweight vintage. The reds have satiny tannins that will not need long term ageing before pulling corks, and likewise the whites have an approachability that makes them very charming. Jadot decided to block the malolactic fermentation on roughly half the whites to retain an extra backbone of acidity. The resulting wines are delicious to drink with a high quality ceiling and will appeal to all.
